Debt Avalanche
If saving the most money is the only goal, there’s a mathematically correct order to pay off debt — this is it.
What Is It
The debt avalanche method means paying the minimum on every debt, then directing all extra money toward the debt with the highest interest rate first. Once that debt is paid off, its freed-up payment rolls into the next-highest-rate debt, and the process repeats until everything is paid off. The balance size of each debt is irrelevant to the order — only the rate decides what gets attacked next. The amount available to throw at each successive debt keeps growing as earlier debts get cleared, so the pace of payoff accelerates even though the extra-payment budget itself never changes.
Why It Matters
This is the mathematically optimal method — it minimizes total interest paid across every debt, every time, regardless of balance size. The trade-off is psychological, not financial: if the highest-rate debt also happens to be the largest balance, progress can feel slow at first, since there’s no quick “win” the way there is with the debt snowball method. On paper it’s the better plan for anyone motivated purely by minimizing what they pay in interest.
That slower early feedback is the real reason some people abandon avalanche partway through, even knowing it saves more money — the math being correct doesn’t automatically make it the easier method to stick with. Anyone confident they’ll follow through regardless of visible early wins gets the full benefit of this method with no real downside.
Quick Example
Three debts: a $6,000 credit card at 24% APR, a $2,000 card at 18% APR, and a $10,000 car loan at 6% APR. Avalanche order: the $6,000 card first (highest rate, 24%), then the $2,000 card (18%), then the car loan (6%) — attacking the highest rate regardless of the fact that it’s not the smallest balance. Notice the car loan, despite being the largest debt by far, comes last simply because its rate is lowest.
