Emergency fund first — always.
Most FIRE plans assume you won't need to touch your investments during a down market. An underfunded emergency fund is the #1 reason people raid retirement accounts at the worst possible time, locking in losses and resetting the clock on compound growth. A fully funded emergency fund isn't just a safety net — it's what makes your investment strategy work.
