Why It Matters
Understanding your net worth
$192,084
U.S. Median Net Worth
Half of U.S. households are above this, half below. The mean is over $1M due to extreme wealth concentration at the top. (Fed SCF 2022)
~60%
Home Equity Share
For the typical American aged 45–54, roughly 60% of net worth is tied up in home equity — liquid investable wealth is significantly lower than total net worth
25×
The FIRE Number
Financial independence requires approximately 25× your annual expenses in investable assets — the foundation of the 4% rule
Net worth is the scoreboard. Liquid net worth is the game.
Your total net worth includes your home — but your house doesn't fund your retirement unless you sell it. For FIRE planning, liquid net worth (investments + cash + retirement accounts) is the number that matters. A $600,000 net worth with $500,000 in home equity and $100,000 in investments looks very different on a FIRE timeline than $600,000 in index funds. Once you know both numbers, model how they translate to a retirement date in RetireSmart.

How we calculate and compare your net worth
▼
- Total net worth: sum of all assets minus sum of all liabilities
- Liquid net worth: total net worth minus home equity (home value − mortgage balance, floor 0) minus other real estate minus vehicle value
- Debt-to-asset ratio: total liabilities ÷ total assets × 100. Not displayed if total assets = 0.
- FIRE gap: (annual expenses × 25) minus liquid net worth. Based on the 4% safe withdrawal rate rule. Simplified estimate only.
- U.S. peer percentile: Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances 2022, released October 2023. Figures in 2022 dollars, not inflation-adjusted. Percentile estimated using piecewise linear interpolation.
- International comparison: UBS Global Wealth Report 2025 median wealth per adult × 1.9 (U.S. average adults per household). Household sizes vary by country — illustrative estimates only.
